My best scrapping friend, Sharon and I signed up for Donna Downey's Inspired event in North Carolina last August. It cost us $545 each. We also signed up for a mini-workshop which cost us $85 each. The event is scheduled for next week.
Sharon has been diagnosed with cancer and her surgey is scheduled for next Tuesday, a day before we were supposed to fly out. Ummm, it can't wait, obviously. It's cancer.
So, Sharon e-mailed the event planner about what was going on. The planner e-mailed her back saying that the event was non-refundable and non-transferable.
Now, that just stinks to high heaven. Yes, I understand they need to have some kind of policy in place to cover themselves from people who would sign up and then flake out in the end. Sharon is not flaking out, Hello? It's cancer. She didn't plan it, she didn't want it and she would much rather be going to North Carolina to meet me than down to surgery. However, when you have to book an event that far in advance, there should be some recourse should an emergency arise. I'm sure she could get a doctor's note. C'mon people! It's cancer!
And the non-transferable thing really blows my mind. So, even if Sharon found someone willing to buy her spot, she couldn't do it. Not that that would happen this late in the ballgame. Hell, she can't even give it away.
Anyway, I am less than impressed and if I didn't have that original $635, another $554 for airfare and about $175 in supplies already invested, I'd stay home too. I do know that I will never attend another Donna Downey event.

Wow...that is absolutely awful....that Sharon has cancer is horrible, that DD won't give her a refund is just beyond words. Karen offered to pay for me to attend this event with her and I declined...good thing too as I'm moving in two weeks. I hope you enjoy yourself in spite of the situation :(
Thanks Kellee. I'm sure you saw the whole thing play out on TwoPeas. Sharon did finally get a refund late last night but it was after Donna had called both of us and was still standing firm on her original decision. I think she finally came to her senses when she saw the 12 pages of Peas that were standing in support of Sharon. I don't think she would have refunded her if she hadn't been raked over the coals. She also asked me not to add to the thread so I haven't but I have very itchy fingers since she added to it after we spoke.
At any rate, I'm seriously considering just taking a loss and staying home. I'm pretty sure I'll have a scarlet letter on my badge should I decide to go now.

I did read (and add my 2 cents) the drama at 2 Peas. I'm glad Donna woke up and gave Sharon a refund but that doesn't change my opinion of her at all. She only did it to save face (and TRY to save some business). What a mess. Please give Sharon my best when you speak to her again.

DH & I went out for a quick bite to eat last night and I told him all about this saga. He was as sickened as we are. No cancer patient should be put under any stress whatsoever, the disease thrives on it.
I will be praying and praying hard for Sharon on Tuesday. She sounds like such a terrific lady.
